Better naming through hockey

Jonathan Cheechoo scored for the Sharks against the Stars tonight. Cheechoo. It's fun to say.

Not to be outdone is the best name in hockey, maybe the universe, Radek Bonk. Putting that on list of potential names for dog.

Twitter done

I set up a Twitter profile, so if you're into it look me up.

I like the clouds. Design reminds me of Mario Bros., except it's my random thoughts flying around instead of raccoon-tailed Mario.

90/99MW: Woooo!

This is going to wrap up the first Orange Whip '90s Music Week. I went over my alloted time a bit, but I was busy watching the Flyers lose and Top Gear tonight, so chill. There was a lot of stuff I couldn't find, or in too crappy a condition to post, but there was probably lots of stuff I didn't think of as well. So look for more in 2009. Also keep an eye out for Hip Hop Holla Back, or something.

"New Noise" by Refused off of The Shape of Punk to Come.

90/99MW: Try to deal

"Joe Lies (When He Cries)" by the Bouncing Souls off of The Good, the Bad, and the Argyle.

90/99MW: You're in my dreams, pushing dirty dishes around

"Capsized" by Samiam off of Clumsy. Someone should make a video of me doing my dishes. It would be totally emo.

90/99MW: They meant soda can park

"Pop Can Park" by Horace Pinker off of Burn Tempe to the Ground.

Game controller as MP3 player?

Paul Pope. Interesting music player. He explains complicated instruction from art director here.

90/99MW: Still making the grade

"The Distance" by Cake off of Fashion Nugget. A favorite with the Stulin membership.

90/99MW: March of the Blistered

When in doubt when it comes to videos, just have the band set up and play. "March of the Pigs" by Nine Inch Nails off of The Downward Spiral, and "Blistered" by Strife off of In This Defiance. Leather pants definitely not necessary, though.

Cool Uniform Props: Fenerbahce road whites

Usually I prefer simple and classic over busy and modern, but I like the yellow striping with navy on Turkish side Fenerbahce's road uniforms, worn in defeat to Chelsea in the recent second leg of the Champions League semis. The numbers look kind of digital, and the striping cleverly does not run behind the numbers on the back of the jersey. The blue socks work better than the former white socks, too.

90/99MW: Can't pass it up

"Unsung" by Helmet off of Meantime. This song was Helmet's first to make MTV rotation. After it started playing a kid a couple years ahead of me on my high school track team was the first to buy the album. Asked his opinion of it on a team bus ride, he said it was OK. He was wrong. It's amazing, and now classic.

UPDATE: Ron Wood chimes in to say he saw "In The Meantime" on Headbangers Ball before Unsung. I don't remember it that way, but it was a while ago at this point, I could be wrong. Previous to the Meantime stuff, there were videos for "Bad Mood" and "Blacktop" off of their first album, Strap It On, but I don't think they made any kind of dent on MTV.

According to the singles list on Helmet's Wikipedia, "Unsung" and "Give It" were released before "In The Meantime," but it also lists "Biscuits For Smut" before "Wilma's Rainbow" off of Betty, and I remember it the other way around.

We're going to need Project Quantum Leap to solve this one.

90/99MW: They think they found the answer

"Here We Go" by Shelter off of Mantra. This album, owned by my roommate Jeremy, got heavy play by me my sophomore year at Penn State during the only semester I had an 8 a.m. class. I'd get back to the dorm at 9:30 a.m. and have an hour and a half wait to head out to my next class. I would often blast Mantra in the headphones, watch SportsCenter on mute and try not to fall asleep before heading out.

90/99MW: Wallow just this once

"The Waiting Hurt" by No Motiv off of And the Sadness Prevails. Just under the wire for the '90s.

90/99MW: Starin' you down

"Creepy Jackalope Eye" by the Supersuckers off of La Mano Cornuda. It starts in a few seconds, "gotta have faith."

UPDATE: Had to replace this with a different version, which looks about the same but with lower audio levels. Also screws up my headline because the last one's default pic had a closeup of Eddie Spaghetti's face, staring you down if you will. Damn YouTube. At least it starts right away now.

90/99MW: The right words

"Seven" by Sunny Day Real Estate off of Diary. For the longest time I thought the first line was "Sew the head on" when it's just "Sew it on," and the refrain went "You'll taste it, when you die" when it's just "You'll taste it, in time." In fact it still, and probably always will, sound wrong.

90/99MW: It go, it gone

"Undone (The Sweater Song)" by Weezer off of their first self-titled album, aka The Blue Album. Most of my friends don't like this song. They're wrong, it rules. Video's a one-shot take by Spike Jonze.

90/99MW: Pretend it's OK

"Dammit" by Blink-182 off of Dude Ranch.

I blame this song and album, perfect executions of catchy pop punk, for the onslaught of shitty TRL pop punk bands to emerge in its wake. The majors and MTV caught on quick, flooding the air waves with garbage for years to come, ruining the appeal of the sub-genre for many old heads and taking the punk rock aesthetic to its furthest non-punk extremes. We can all name names of the horrible, no need to do so here.

Because this is a celebration bitches. And for all the evil it wrought, Dude Ranch remains infectiously great from start to finish.

90/99MW: Drink the blue Kool-Aid

"Cut Your Hair" by Pavement off of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Always liked the absurdity of this one.

90/99MW: Ain't no half-steppin'

"Step Down" by Sick Of It All off of Scratch the Surface. The Pizzamaker? Nuff said.

Beavis and Butthead liked this one too.

90/99MW: It's all just coming back to me

"Why Did Ever We Meet?" by The Promise Ring off of Nothing Feels Good.

90/99MW: Take your milk and go away

"Same Old Story" by Pennywise off of About Time.

90/99MW: A vital presence

"American Jesus" by Bad Religion off of Recipe for Hate.

90/99MW: Hey

OK, enough Seattle. "Nihilism" by Rancid off of Let's Go.

Coool offf!

Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem came out on DVD this week. Haven't seen it, but based on this scene it looks pretty good.

90/99MW: Ahhhh!

More Seattle. "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains off of Dirt. A pretty effective video for such a simple setup, I think. It's just the band in what's supposed to be a river gulch, or something, with some video images in the puddles.

Something that struck me as wrong, and it came up in conversation with a co-worker years after the fact, was the complete lack of recognition of Layne Staley and AIC after Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002, almost six years ago to the day actually. Yeah, they had the MTV News brief and all, but no tribute or anything. When Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in a car accident less than a week later they had a whole weekend — at least — of crap about her and TLC. Which is fine, but why no Layne Staley tribute? Because he died of a drug overdose?

If you've seen MTV over the last 10 years you wouldn't think AIC would have been aired as much as TLC, but they did a ton of videos that usually got a lot of air play, so it's not like it was some obscure metal band or anything. Coming out of the Seattle/grunge explosion, AIC really had legs, and were considered a huge band in the massive "alternative" movement on MTV, even if they were still basically a metal band.

As Riki Rachtman has said himself, AIC were definitely the best Headbangers Ball guests. That episode where they spent the day at the water park was hilarious.

90/99MW: Whatchoo got me hangin' from, Willis?

This video had "[unreleased version]" in the title at YouTube, but this is the only version of Soundgarden's "Pretty Noose" I remember seeing. Off the band's last album, Down on the Upside, the video was directed by noted concert poster artist and toy designer Frank Kozik, or at least I think it was. Don't know any other Frank Koziks.

90/99MW: Mashed potatoes and stuff like that

"Sliver" by Nirvana off of Incesticide, the album Geffen released after Nevermind featuring demos, covers and stuff that didn't make the Nevermind cut. Amazon called this "a fascinating if less-than-truly essential listening experience," but I beg to differ. In fact, if I had to choose one Nirvana album to keep, it would probably be this one.

In high school I listened to so much Nirvana I pretty much ruined it for myself. To listen to it then was pointless because my mind would just wander and I wouldn't even hear the songs. Not unlike what happened with Yuengling Lager by the end of college. I'd drank it so often (and with enough frequency) that it became like water — I barely even tasted it anymore.

It wasn't until a few months back that I finally ripped all my Nirvana CDs to my computer, and so their songs started popping up in iTunes shuffles. It must have been enough years away from them because they sound good. And the Incesticide tracks still stand out.

Oh, Yuengling tastes good again too.

90/99MW: Fries wit dat

"Chick Magnet" by MxPx off of Life in General. Levels may be a little low, so turn it up man.

How awesome is this?

Smart kid, RC car and partially filled bottles = Super Mario Bros. theme song. Via.

Well, that didn't take long

I was just describing how impressive Moto GP rookie Jorge Lorenzo was in his first race, finishing second in Qatar, and it took him only two more races to win, taking the top step on the podium at Estoril, Portugal this past Sunday. I was watching the Flyers beat the Capitals and didn't see it, but it wasn't a shock as the Fiat Yamaha rider was on the podium in the first two races and has been very fast in qualifying.

Lorenzo's reward for winning? Surgery for arm pump. Yeeesh.

Looks like the Chupa Chups man will be in the thick of it not only this year, but for years to come. Plus, he's a little Spaniard I can root for against the little Spaniard I don't root for, Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa, who won the second round race at Jerez, Spain.

My main guy in Moto GP, American and Repsol Honda rider Nicky Hayden, didn't fare so well. He crashed out of fourth place half way through, obviously before the below photo was shot. The other Americans did well, though, with Tech 3 Yamaha's Colin Edwards finishing fourth and Kawasaki's John Hopkins fifth.

90/99MW: Just ain't right

The Orange Whip editorial board has convened and voted to extend '90s Music Day into '90s Music Week, because there's just not enough time in one day to decide between four different videos of Social Distortion's "Cold Feelings," off of Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell.

"Cold Feelings" might have been my favorite SD song, "Bad Luck," if not for the damn disabled embedding. Getting annoying. But this song rocks too.

90/99MW: Concentrate on what the people say

Speaking of Quicksand, "Dine Alone" off of Slip. Oh, and people (record labels) posting on YouTube but disabling embedding? You get a wag of the finger.

90/99MW: Respect is key

I am declaring today '90s Music Day here at Orange Whip. In between doing taxes and other crap I'll be posting some '90s stuff I like.

Starting it off is "Kid Candy" by Seaweed off of Four. I remember first seeing this video on some random alternative video show that ran on USA Network at weird and irregular times, usually filling in gaps between the end of a movie and the start of the next program — so it would only be 10 or 15 minutes of videos. This video would go on to be featured on a Beavis and Butthead episode. They liked it.

Reading the band's Wikipedia entry, I see Alan Cage became their drummer at one point. Cage was the drummer in Quicksand, and once called The Daily Collegian — Penn State's student-run newspaper — for an arranged interview. I was on staff at the time and answered the phone, but whoever set up the interview was nowhere to be found. Cage was not thrilled.

This was '94 or '95, before cell phones, so you had to be in the office to get the call. Reporter never did show up. Dumbass.

UPDATE: Had to replace this video with a cruddier version after the first one was deleted.

You know, this video works well with a pretty simple set up. Yeah, the stuff with the little heshers stealing a bike is funny, but setting up the band in a cramped arcade and just shooting them from angles works surprisingly well.

Get in the barber shop

Keeping track of Black Flag's numerous lineups would be difficult enough had they maintained their hairstyles, but of course they didn't. Punks, duh. And so the handy diagram above. Via.

Searching for Meaty McGillicutty

Just when you think YouTube has everything ...

I was searching around for a sketch from the old Jon Stewart Show, possibly from the last episode. It was a take on Willy Wonka set in a meat factory run by, yes, Meaty McGillicutty, a psychotic Vietnam vet whose factory operates in a state of fear. I don't recall what they called the Oompa Loompa meat men.

This bit of comedy gold has apparently escaped the notice of the web, even Wikipedia and this dude. But I didn't make this up. Reni Goldberg knows what I'm talking about.

I did, however, come across this Helmet performance.

UPDATE: The call for Meat has been heeded! See this post's comments for a link to the Meaty McGillicutty segment on the second-to-last episode of the Jon Stewart Show.

Also, for another performance by Helmet — albeit a shortened one — from the episode in the above video, check this out.

Play ball 2008

I wrote up a Phillies season preview over at Will We Ever Win? Uncle Charley might not like it. But based on some of his recent comments, he knows what I'm talking about.

Cool Uniform Props: Barcelona road oranges

I was surprised to see Barcelona wearing these orange uniforms against German squad Schalke 04 in a Champions League quarterfinal win this week. Don't know if they've had them a while, or if they're brand new, but we at Orange Whip appreciate the all-orange look. It helps that Barca's my team in La Liga, even if Patrick Kluivert's long gone.

Small world, tiny catastrophes

Phillyist spotlighted Philadelphia artist Amy Walsh today. Two of the pieces detailed on her Flickr page involve miniature worlds and scenes visible inside cardboard boxes and crates stacked in the middle of a room. Very cool.

In the pic below, from The Ministry of Tiny Catastrophes piece, a motor powers a scrolling landscape and the tornado doing the damage.
