This is going to wrap up the first Orange Whip '90s Music Week. I went over my alloted time a bit, but I was busy watching the Flyers lose and Top Gear tonight, so chill. There was a lot of stuff I couldn't find, or in too crappy a condition to post, but there was probably lots of stuff I didn't think of as well. So look for more in 2009. Also keep an eye out for Hip Hop Holla Back, or something.

When in doubt when it comes to videos, just have the band set up and play. "March of the Pigs" by Nine Inch Nails off of The Downward Spiral, and "Blistered" by Strife off of In This Defiance. Leather pants definitely not necessary, though.

90/99MW: Can't pass it up
"Unsung" by Helmet off of Meantime. This song was Helmet's first to make MTV rotation. After it started playing a kid a couple years ahead of me on my high school track team was the first to buy the album. Asked his opinion of it on a team bus ride, he said it was OK. He was wrong. It's amazing, and now classic.
UPDATE: Ron Wood chimes in to say he saw "In The Meantime" on Headbangers Ball before Unsung. I don't remember it that way, but it was a while ago at this point, I could be wrong. Previous to the Meantime stuff, there were videos for "Bad Mood" and "Blacktop" off of their first album, Strap It On, but I don't think they made any kind of dent on MTV.
According to the singles list on Helmet's Wikipedia, "Unsung" and "Give It" were released before "In The Meantime," but it also lists "Biscuits For Smut" before "Wilma's Rainbow" off of Betty, and I remember it the other way around.
We're going to need Project Quantum Leap to solve this one.
90/99MW: They think they found the answer
"Here We Go" by Shelter off of Mantra. This album, owned by my roommate Jeremy, got heavy play by me my sophomore year at Penn State during the only semester I had an 8 a.m. class. I'd get back to the dorm at 9:30 a.m. and have an hour and a half wait to head out to my next class. I would often blast Mantra in the headphones, watch SportsCenter on mute and try not to fall asleep before heading out.
90/99MW: Wallow just this once
"The Waiting Hurt" by No Motiv off of And the Sadness Prevails. Just under the wire for the '90s.
90/99MW: Starin' you down
"Creepy Jackalope Eye" by the Supersuckers off of La Mano Cornuda. It starts in a few seconds, "gotta have faith."
UPDATE: Had to replace this with a different version, which looks about the same but with lower audio levels. Also screws up my headline because the last one's default pic had a closeup of Eddie Spaghetti's face, staring you down if you will. Damn YouTube. At least it starts right away now.
90/99MW: The right words
"Seven" by Sunny Day Real Estate off of Diary. For the longest time I thought the first line was "Sew the head on" when it's just "Sew it on," and the refrain went "You'll taste it, when you die" when it's just "You'll taste it, in time." In fact it still, and probably always will, sound wrong.
90/99MW: It go, it gone
"Undone (The Sweater Song)" by Weezer off of their first self-titled album, aka The Blue Album. Most of my friends don't like this song. They're wrong, it rules. Video's a one-shot take by Spike Jonze.
90/99MW: Pretend it's OK
"Dammit" by Blink-182 off of Dude Ranch.
I blame this song and album, perfect executions of catchy pop punk, for the onslaught of shitty TRL pop punk bands to emerge in its wake. The majors and MTV caught on quick, flooding the air waves with garbage for years to come, ruining the appeal of the sub-genre for many old heads and taking the punk rock aesthetic to its furthest non-punk extremes. We can all name names of the horrible, no need to do so here.
Because this is a celebration bitches. And for all the evil it wrought, Dude Ranch remains infectiously great from start to finish.
90/99MW: Drink the blue Kool-Aid
"Cut Your Hair" by Pavement off of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Always liked the absurdity of this one.

90/99MW: Ahhhh!
More Seattle. "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains off of Dirt. A pretty effective video for such a simple setup, I think. It's just the band in what's supposed to be a river gulch, or something, with some video images in the puddles.
Something that struck me as wrong, and it came up in conversation with a co-worker years after the fact, was the complete lack of recognition of Layne Staley and AIC after Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002, almost six years ago to the day actually. Yeah, they had the MTV News brief and all, but no tribute or anything. When Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in a car accident less than a week later they had a whole weekend — at least — of crap about her and TLC. Which is fine, but why no Layne Staley tribute? Because he died of a drug overdose?
If you've seen MTV over the last 10 years you wouldn't think AIC would have been aired as much as TLC, but they did a ton of videos that usually got a lot of air play, so it's not like it was some obscure metal band or anything. Coming out of the Seattle/grunge explosion, AIC really had legs, and were considered a huge band in the massive "alternative" movement on MTV, even if they were still basically a metal band.
As Riki Rachtman has said himself, AIC were definitely the best Headbangers Ball guests. That episode where they spent the day at the water park was hilarious.
