Stanley Cup 3-Pack

Because sometimes half a sixer is all you need ...

The NHL Finals are well under way, and with their Game 3 overtime win there's hope for the San Jose Sharks (aka not Pittsburgh). Rooting interest or not, the NHL playoffs are always enjoyable. So too are these hockey related songs straight out of the great white north.

First up is Calgary, Alberta, Canada's own Belvedere with their tribute to former Flames center Joel Otto, "Two Minutes for Looking So Good." Next is The Tragically Hip with "Fifty Mission Cap," which offers a bit of history on the seemingly unrelated topics of former Toronto Maple Leaf Bill Barilko and WWII bomber pilot hats. Last is Propagandhi with "Resisting Tyrannical Government," off of arguably the greatest punk album of all time. If you don't get the Steve Smith reference, here ya go.

Enjoy, and remember to play the man, not the puck, kids.

Zezel, R.I.P.

Non-hockey fans might better recognize Peter Zezel as one of the background teammates in Youngblood, but 'round these parts he'll be remembered as a core member of the classic '80s Flyers team that lost in the Stanley Cup finals to Edmonton. Zezel died yesterday at age 44.

As a side note Youngblood, I can't say when I last saw the movie, but was the point really that he had to learn to fight to make the NHL? I mean, I remember it being pretty cheesy, but not that outright boneheaded.

Thunderdome Pennsylvania

Starting tonight, two Keystone State teams enter, one team advances to the Stanley Cup finals. "I know you won't break the rules, they're aren't any." Well, OK there are, but whatever.

Unfortunately for the Flyers their best defenseman — maybe best player — Kimmo Timonen is out the rest of the playoffs with a blood clot in his ankle. But no excuses, no mercy ... Thunderdome!

(Don't ask me how long it took to make this.)

Better naming through hockey

Jonathan Cheechoo scored for the Sharks against the Stars tonight. Cheechoo. It's fun to say.

Not to be outdone is the best name in hockey, maybe the universe, Radek Bonk. Putting that on list of potential names for dog.

Joffrey Lupul puts home the game 7 overtime winner against the Capitals. Woot.
